More information

2nd Lt Carl W. Moore graduated from Vincennes High School in 1935 and Grinnell College in 1940.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 7 December 1943.

Statement of 2nd Lt. Gordon L. Doolittle:
"We followed one No. 109 down to the deck from 26,000 feet, and Capt Sykes the leader of Yellow Flight got on his tail and shot him down. Capt Sykes then got on the tail of another ME-109 which was in Luftberry with his wingman Lt Moore. We then went up to three thousand feet to give them top cover. They were in a tight turn to the left with the ME-109 in between them, and I noticed a trail of white smoke coming from Lt Moore's left engine. From all appearances, it looked like he was losing his left engine, because he banked sharply to the left and then attempted to recover to his right. Due to low altitude, he failed to recover and smashed into the ground on the right wing and belly, and the plane exploded on impact. Lt Moore crashed thirty miles due south of Hamburg, Germany at 1155 hours."

Lt Moore was initially buried at the cemetery of Ottensen.
