Harold L. Cobb attended the University of South Carolina and was a clerk in the office of his uncle, Judge Cobb, before he joined the Air Corps at Fort Jackson, South Carolina on 26 April 1941.He was promoted to the rank of Captain in November 1943 when stationed at Bluethenthal Field, North Carolina.
Maj Cobb had flown more than 95 combat missions in 1944 and was commanding officer of the Varga Boys squadron. In January 1945, he had completed his 122nd operational mission.
His brother Robert Hardin Cobb also served in the U.S. Air Corps.
