Pfc Leland W. Clark graduated from Wilson Junior High and Academy High School. When he was a teenager he worked as a newsboy and later worked as a blacksmith in an iron foundry.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Erie, Pennsylvania on 10 December 1942.
