Pfc Carlson enlisted on 16 June 1942.He was part of a platoon whose mission was to drive the enemy from a road-block so that road-block could be removed. During this engagement, he was instanly killed by enemy artillery fire.
He was initially buried in a temporary grave at Henri-Chapelle on 15 October 1944. After being disinterred and after the cemetery was given a permanent status, he was given his final resting place on 17 June 1948.
