T/5 Edward L. Atkinson attended high school for 3 years and worked on a farm.He enlisted in Abilene, Texas on 28 November 1942 and trained at Camp Maxey and Camp Swift, Texas and at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He as sent overseas six months before his death.
At the time of his death, three of his brothers were also serving overseas. They were Pfc William A. Atkinson, with the engineers in Italy, Cpl James W. Atkinson, a paratrooper engineer in the Philippines and Lt U.L. Atkinson who was recovering from wounds in a Philippine hospital.
