1st Lt Edwin K. Newman was born in Franklin and spent his early boyhood days there. He moved to Winston-Salem with his parents, and graduated from Reynolds High School in 1935. Following his graduation from Citadel (Military College) Charleston, South Carolina in 1939, from which he received his commission, he was an instructor at Fort Benning in Georgia. He entered the armed forces on 4 January 1942.At the Citadel he majored in Business Administration and where he acquired the nickname 'Benny'.
