Pvt Joseph Veilleux enlisted in Portland Maine on 17 March 1943.

He and Sgt Shellito volunteered to make a reconnaissance for a crossing site over the Wurm river. The are to be covered was in full view of formidable defenses within the line and they were subjected to heavy concentration of enemy fire. Despite the dangers encountered, they courageously remained in the exposed area until the mission had been completed. Sgt. Shellito was also killed and is als buried at Henri-Chapelle, and was postumously awarded a Silver Star for his action.
