More information

Capt George D. Warriner graduated from Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute in 1941. He was married to Mary Barksdale Hutcheson on 23 December 1943.

He was awarded the Bronze Medal for heroic conduct in action with an armed enemy. The citation reads in part: "On 1 January 1945, during an attack near ***, Capt Warriner's company was ordered to follow the medium tank enveloping force into ***. During this action, his company came under heavy enemy anti-tank fire which inflicted numerous and severe casualties. Capt Warriner reported the situation over the radio to the battalion commander and immediately moved forward in his tank in an attempt to direct a flanking maneuver to destroy the hostile anti-tank guns. While personally leading his company in this attack, Capt Warriner was killed by a heavy enemy projectile."
