Pfc Alpha L. Powers Jr. graduated from Grant High School in 1942 and attended Oregon State College for one year.

He enlisted in Portland, Oregon on 16 July 1943. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.) and studied at Santa Rosa College and Loyola University in California. When this program was disbanded, he was transferred to the infantry.
