Pfc Robert A. Layton graduated from Dilworth High School and attended MSTC College for three years. He was employed at the Fairmont Creamery before he joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Fargo, North Dakota on 3 September 1942.He was an aircraft identification instructor for two years with the Army Air Corps before he was transferred to the infantry.
