More information

1st Lt Edward R. Hood was a mechanic.

He enlisted at Fort Benjamin, Harrison, Indiana on 25 January 1941. Initially he became a medic but later transferred to flying school where he received his wings at Stockton Field in January 1944.

He piloted 14 of his 19 missions with the same crew. On his last four missions, he was a command pilot.

On his last mission he flew as an additional crew member aboard a 'Pathfinder' plane, equipped with H2X Radar, with another squadron.

About 1 minute before bombs away, the aircraft received a direct hit between #1 and #2 engines, bending back the outer wing panel which hit the rudder, sending the plane into a flat spin. In the spin on the way down, the plane broke apart. One crew reported seeing parachutes, alle the other crews reported no parachutes seen.

One crew member survived and was taken prisoner. The other eight crew members were killed.
