More information
Cpl Albert F. Wilmoth attended high school for one year and was an attendant at a filling station before he joined the National Guard in Webb City, Missouri on 16 September 1940.He was awarded the Silver Star medal posthumously for actions on the day of his death. The citation reads:" For gallantry in action against the enemy near Braubach, Germany, 27 March 1945. Cpl Wilmoth, a Browning automatic rifleman on point of his platoon as it advanced in attack, located two sniper nests and opening fire killed two Germans, seeing this display of accurate shooting, surrendered. Again advancing, the squad leader became pinned down by sniper fire, Cpl Wilmoth, after locating the position of snipers, was preparing to fire when an enemy bullet struck a hand grenade fastened to his jacked, which exploded causing a serious wound. Despite the extreme pain he continued firing at enemy positions until he was mortally wounded by enemy automatic weapons fire. His gallant actions saved many lives and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army."
