T/5 Walter G. Shade was a railroad brakeman. He was married to Edna Pearl Balliet on 13 October 1942.He enlisted in Altoona, Pennsylvania on 5 November 1942.
His brother, Sgt Norman L. Shade, was killed on 7 August 1945, three miles west of Tinian Island in the Pacific. He served as a gunner on a B-29 Superfortress. He is remembered at the Courts of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial.
