1st Lt William E. Grimes Jr. attended the University of Alabama and the University of North Carolina and was employed at the Van Straaten's Clothing Company before he joined the National Guard in South Boston, Virginia on 3 February 1941.On 2 November 1944 he was wounded and captured by the Germans. For five months he remained a prisoner of war. His death occurred while on the way from Hammelburg Prison Camp Stalag XIII-C to the Nürnberg Prison Camp Stalag XIII-D during an allied air raid.
