More information
Pfc Edwin G. Blonigan was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his actions on the day of his death. The citation cited: During a night attack two platoons of K Company entered a large minefield and suffered numerous casualties. Despite intense mortar and artillery fire falling in the area, Pvt Blonigan and a comrade volunteered for the hazardous task of evacuating the wounded. They made five trips into the minefield; and as they worked the enemy used flares and the mortar and artillery fire increased in intensity. Undaunted, they worked throughout the night. As they entered the minefield for the fifth time, they were killed by the burst of a mortar shell. By their magnificient courage at the sacrifice of their own lives Pvt Blonigan and his comrade assisted in saving the lives of many others.Source of information: André Koch, www.abmc.gov, www.wwiimemorial.com, www.ancestry.com - 1920/1930/1940 Census / Headstone and Interment record / U.S. WWII Draft Cards Young Men / https://36th-id.frb.io / www.newspapers.com - The Courier 2 August 1945
