More information

2nd Lt John B. Stewart was sent overseas in May 1944.

"Flying a P-47D he took off from Chartres, France on a dive-bombing operation to Meaux, France. After strafing enemy transport, the leader called to go home as all his ammunition had been expended. Lt Stewart called that he still had plenty of it left and got permission to strafe a staff car that they had missed. His P-47 hit a tree, could not gain altitude and crashed 0820hrs north of Betz, 17 miles north of Meaux."

Lt Stewart was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Champigneul, France.
