Sgt Lloyd B. Maples was a mechanic and repairman of motor vehicles before he joined the National Guard in Galveston, Texas on 25 November 1940.

He experienced combat in Salerno and the mountains of Italy as well as the capture of Rome and the landing in southern France on 15 August and the hard fighting in the Vosges Mountains where he died in the fighting to cross the Meurthe River before St Die.

He stepped on a land mine and died of wounds on his leg and body in a hospital.
