Pvt James E. Dyer enlisted at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 18 July 1942 and received his training at Camp Croft, South Carolina, Camp Edwards, Massachusetts and Amherst, Virginia.The platoon was on a mine sweeping mission when a mine was detonated which in turn exploded several other mines. The body of James Dyer was completely disintegrated by the explosion.
