Pvt Melvin L. Sumter entered the service on 7 September 1943.

He attended public schools at Gore and at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.

He was buried in the Ardennes cemetery after he was found on 13 June 1950. He was first buried at Block Y, Row 2, Grave 27.
