Robert Mowery enlisted on 4 August 1943 in Greensburg Pennsylvania.Lt Dick Durkee remembered the following: "The Germans were setting up there in the town, just waiting for us. But orders were orders, so when Booth gave the nod we went. Lt Dahl and I were in the lane behind the two scouts, leading. One scout, Pvt Robert Mowery, was carrying the BAR and he was the first to be hit; he got hit in the stomach and once in the head."
