Sgt Donald L. Burkhart attended high school for four years and worked in the chemical industry before he enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 21 March 1942.He was reported wounded in action in Italy in September 1943. He suffered a penetrating wound in the right arm from shell fragments. He returned to duty in November 1943. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
In May 1945 Sgt Burkhart was hospitalized for diphtheria that led to myocarditis from which he died on 21 June 1945.
