Pvt Bernard McDonnell graduated from Brackenridge High School and was employed by the San Antonio Light newspaper.He enlisted at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on 25 August 1944 and was overseas for only six months when he was killed in action..
His brothers, Pvt Henry McDonnell, a paratrooper, and S/Sgt Edward McDonnell, also served during WWII in the European Theatre.
