S/Sgt William F. Hoffer was a teacher in primary school before he enlisted in Camden, New Jersey on 18 November 1942. He had been overseas 14 months.He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. The citation cited:
For outstanding courage and devotion to duty in action on November 20 with the Ninth Army in Germany when he used his tank command to help make way for an infantry advance against heavy enemy resistance.
