Lt Col Charles E. Etter joined the Regular Army in August 1940, and was sent overseas in December 1942. He took part in the invasion of North Africa and Sicily before his unit was sent to France.For his part in the liberation of France he was awarded the Silver Star.
In a letter to his parents he stated that his unit was one of the first battalions to enter Germany and expressed pride in the men of his unit.
