S/Sgt William F. Withem graduated from Glouster High School in 1935. He worked for the Republic Steel Tube CoHe enlisted at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio on 11 July 1941 and had his basic training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, after which he volunteered for the paratroopers and was transferred to Fort Benning, In May 1942, he was sent overseas to England. From there he was sent to North Africa where he was reported wounded in action on 8 November 1942. He reported wounded in action a second time in Italy on 25 February 1943.
