More information

T/5 Hyman Ackerman attended high school for four years and was an electrician.

He enlisted in New York City, New York on 21 November 1942.

T/5 Ackerman was a passenger aboard a CG-4A glider with serialnumber 43-27424, with destination Landing Zone "N", near Diersfordt, Germany during Operation Varsity.

The glider had two crew members and four passengers, all members of the 411th Airborne Quartermaster Company, on board.

Statement of Sgt Abraham Goldstein, one of the passengers: "It happened on 24 March 1945. We landed at about 1230 hours across the Rhine near Wesel. We were hit by flak just as we were out off from the C-47. As far as I know all passengers and crew were killed. My Captain came down to see me before we were shipped over to the collecting point and said every one was done for as far as he knew. I saw the co-pilot there, he was dead. I think Lt Ellis was killed - I saw a body in the flames, headless, I think it was him. I got out because I was the ranking man to make a reconnaissance to see where the enemy was. In a minute they had everything at us. I jumped out and cleared the glider by about fifteen to twenty feet and before I could tell the men to get away they threw everything at us. The glider burned up instantly."
Sgt Goldstein was the only survivor. Crew members were: pilot 1st Lt Duane E. Ellis and Co-Pilot Lorne F. Bulpitt. Passengers: Sgt Abraham Goldstein, Cpl James T. St. John, T/5 Hyman Ackerman and Pfc William F. Evans.
