2nd Lt Robert I. Stanley Jr. graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School. He attended the University of Florida for a year and transferred to the Virginia Technical Institute where he graduated in March 1943.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Blacksburg, Virginia on 24 June 1942 and attended Officer's Candidate School at Camp Davis, North Carolina where he received his commission in August 1943.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium.
