Pvt Smith graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1942.He was a carrier and Times Herald mailing room employe before he enlisted on 17 March 1943, and was sent overseas on 8 July 1944.
His brother, 2nd Lt John I. Smith was a fighter pilot and was killed in action on 30 December 1944. He is buried at the American Military Cemetery of Luxemburg.
