Lt. Schaffner graduated from Purdue University in December 1942 and went at once to field artillery school at Fort Sill, OklahomaHe was married to Becky Morrison on 11 April 1943, three days after being commissioned a second lieutenant. He was promoted to first lieutenant on 2 October 1943 and returned to Fort Sill for officers' school. He was sent overseas in November 1944.
He was killed by artillery fire.
