More information

Florindo Mainente immigrated to the United States, sailing with the SS La Provence on 19 May 1907 from Havre, France to New York.

For many years he was employed by the Arcadia laundry and later operated his own laundry, which he gave up to enlist on 13 July 1943. He trained at Camp Barkeley, Texas and in the early part of 1944 was sent to England. He was wounded in action in August 1944 for which he was awarded a Purple Heart Medal.

In December 1944 he single handedly rescued 152 casualties trapped by a snowstorm and enemy fire in the bitter fighting near Stavelot. For this action he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

T/5 Florindo Mainente died in a hospital near Brand, Germany, of wounds incurred when a mine exploded under his jeep during a night advance.
