T/5 Bernard Chernin attended college and was a clerk before he enlisted in New York City, New York on 27 October 1942.

He was the radio operator on duty when a rifle company of the 62nd Volksgrenadier Division attacked the unit at 0530 hrs. on the morning of 22 December. He stayed at his post during the attack and continued to relay command instructions until the C.P was overrun and he was captured with 15 others of the headquarters staff. He was not liberated after a counter attack by members of the 27th AIB, assisted by Company B of the 14th Tank Battalion at 1130 hours on the the same day.

He was removed from the area along with other American POW’s and force marched to stalag IV-B where they arrived on 17 January 1945, then to Stalag VIII-A where they arrived on 2 February 1945, and finely to Stalag XI-B where they arrived on 3 March 1945. He was admitted to the camp hospital on 19 March 1945. He died on 21 April 1945 of Pneumonia and Malnutrition.
