After his mother married Herman M. Garber in 1927, throughout the rest of his childhood, Fred Earle was known as Raymond E. Garber. He attended Prescott High School and later Oregon State College in Corvallis, where he completed three years.2nd Lt Fred R. Earle volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in Phoenix, Arizona on 15 October 1942. Later he was transferred to the infantry.
He was married to Mary Marie Jackson on 25 September 1944.
