S/Sgt John P. Van Rixoort graduated from Keyport High School, attended the University of Kansas and was a civilian employee at Camp Kilmer.

He enlisted in New Jersey on 20 June 1942 and received infantry training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and was later transferred to the ordnance branch at Fort Barrancas, Florida. He volunteered to return to the infantry and was sent to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, and then went overseas in October 1944.

His father, Peter Van Rixoort, was born in the Netherlands and moved to the United States when he was a child.

S/Sgt Van Rixoort's son was only two and a half months old when his father was killed.
