Herbert D. Boies graduated from high school in 1941. He stayed with his aunt Faith in Los Angeles during the period he attended college in Pasadena.He joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Des Moines, Iowa during his junior year at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls on 17 October 1942. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program. When the program was disbanded, he was transferred to the infantry in april 1944 and was sent overseas in October 1944.
He was reported wounded in action on 1 December 1944 during an attack on Linnich, Ruhrdorf and Flossdorf, Germany. He died of his wounds at the 111th Evacuation Hospital in Heerlen
