More information

S/Sgt Amos R. Collins attended Central High School for four years.

He enlisted on 29 January 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

S/Sgt Collins voluntarily crawled over exposed terrain to knock out a hostile bunker with a hand grenade when his platoon was pinned down by enemy fire. While covering the platoon's withdrawal with a Browning Automatic Rifle, he was mortally wounded.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross citation "...for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 345th Infantry Regiment, 87th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 27 February 1945. Staff Sergeant Collins' intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 87th Infantry Division, and the United States Army."
