Claude Chapin graduated from Essex Classical Institute in 1932. He and his older brother Graton worked on their father’s dairy farm. In addition to farming and taking care of his eight to ten acre apple orchard, June also enjoyed hiking the hills around the property and enjoying the views of Lake Champlain, the Green Mountain range, and the Adirondack Mountains from atop these trails. He simply loved the farming life, his family, his beloved hiking hills, and the mountains of Vermont.

Pfc Claude B. Chapin enlisted at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 6 February 1942.

He was killed by small arms fire to the head.

Pfc Chapin was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Foy, Belgium on 19 February 1945. After bein disinterred, he was given his final resting place at Henri-Chapelle on 12 November 1948.

His is remembered at the Mountain View Cemetery in Essex Center, Vermont.
