Matthew Carito attended operated a shoe repair shop with his brother in their hometown,

He enlisted in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on 1 January 1943 and received basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, where his brother Patrick, by coincidence, later would be assigned to the same bunk.

He was sent overseas in June 1944.

Pvt Carito was killed by small arms fire in the back of his head.

Pvt Carito was initialy buried at the Temporary American Miliatary Cemetery of St. Juan, France. At the request of his family he was given his final resting place at Henri-Chapelle on 10 August 1948 next to his brother Patrick.
