John J. Hannon attended West Scranton High School for two years and was a molder at Sweets Foundry.He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Rochester, New York on 26 September 1942.
He was hospitalized in England after being wounded in Normandy for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. After recovering from his wounds, he rejoined his unit.
The 2nd Battalion on the 401st GIR served as the 3rd Battalion of the 325th GIR, which was a regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division.
